Diplomatic Deep Freeze: Russia Expels UK Envoy Amid Swirling Espionage Accusations
In the latest blow to already fractured relations between London and Moscow, Russia has ordered a British diplomat to leave the country, citing allegations of espionage and the covert gathering of sensitive economic data.
The move marks another chapter in a long-running diplomatic tit-for-tat between the two nations, a cycle of retaliation that has steadily accelerated since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The FSB’s Allegations
According to Russian state media, the Federal Security Service (FSB) claims the unnamed British diplomat engaged in illicit intelligence activities. The FSB alleges that the individual intentionally provided false information when applying for entry into Russia. Furthermore, Russian authorities claim the diplomat used informal economic meetings as a cover to extract sensitive state information.
In response to these findings, the Russian government has revoked the diplomat’s accreditation and issued a strict two-week deadline for their departure. Following the expulsion order, Danae Dholakia, the UK’s chargé d’affaires in Moscow, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry. She reportedly departed the meeting without speaking to the press.
The View From London
The UK government has forcefully rejected Moscow’s narrative. A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office dismissed the FSB’s claims as “complete nonsense,” characterizing the expulsion as part of an “aggressive and co-ordinated campaign of harassment against British diplomats.”
“Russia has been pumping out malicious and completely baseless accusations about their work,” the spokesperson stated, adding a firm warning: “The UK does not stand for intimidation of British embassy staff and their families.”
A Cycle of Retaliation
This latest expulsion is not an isolated incident but rather a continuation of a bitter diplomatic standoff. The corridors of embassies in both London and Moscow have seen a steady exodus of staff over the past few years.
Earlier this year, Russia expelled another British diplomat under similar accusations of spying. Before that, in March 2025, Moscow ousted two British officials, prompting the UK to retaliate by revoking the accreditation of a Russian diplomat and a diplomatic spouse in London.
As the geopolitical rift over the war in Ukraine continues to widen, the space for traditional diplomacy between the UK and Russia appears to be shrinking by the day, leaving an atmosphere defined by mutual suspicion and frequent expulsions.
