The defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), have kicked off their IPL 2026 campaign with a resounding statement, dismantling the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 6 wickets at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. What looked to be a competitive clash quickly turned into a masterclass in chasing, leaving the SRH camp searching for answers.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, batting first, put up a formidable total of 201/9 in their 20 overs. The innings was anchored by a spectacular 80-run knock from Ishan Kishan off just 38 deliveries, glittering with five sixes and eight boundaries. Despite the imposing target of 202, RCB’s batting lineup proved entirely unfazed.
The chase was a spectacle of explosive hitting. Virat Kohli turned back the clock with a masterful 69 off 38 balls, while Devdutt Padikkal delivered a devastating blow to the SRH bowlers, smashing 61 off a mere 26 deliveries. The duo’s highly destructive batting assault stripped away any pressure the scoreboard might have presented, allowing RCB to effortlessly chase down the target in just 15.4 overs.
The aftermath in the SRH dressing room was understandably somber. Head Coach Daniel Vettori did not mince words when assessing his team’s defensive effort. Admitting that his side fell desperately short with the ball, Vettori bluntly described the outing as “one of our poorer bowling performances.”
“We started well,” Vettori noted, referencing the early exchanges, but he pointed out that the bowling unit ultimately lacked the necessary discipline. By handing too many easy scoring opportunities to players of Kohli and Padikkal’s caliber, SRH effectively bowled themselves out of the contest.
As the tournament gets underway, RCB has immediately reminded the league why they hold the crown, while SRH will need to head back to the drawing board to tighten up their bowling attack before their next fixture.
